Aka Cords and Energy Flow
Huna describes invisible connections between all things—aka cords. Modern physics calls it entanglement and field theory. Same truth, different language.

You Are Connected, Whether You Like It or Not
Let’s get one thing straight. You are not an island. You’re not a self-contained, isolated little meat-sack running around, making independent decisions. That’s a comforting illusion, a story we tell ourselves to feel in control. But it’s bullshit. The universe is a swirling, chaotic, interconnected web of energy, and you are hopelessly, beautifully tangled up in it.
The ancient Hawaiians knew this. They had a name for these connections: aka cords. Invisible threads of energy that link you to every person you’ve ever met, every place you’ve ever been, and every thought you’ve ever had. It’s not some woo-woo, crystal-waving fantasy. It’s a fundamental truth about the nature of reality. And modern physics, in its own weird way, is finally catching up. They call it quantum entanglement, but it’s the same damn thing. A recognition that at the most basic level, everything is connected.
So, if you’re ready to ditch the illusion of the separate self and plug into the raw, untamed power of the universe, then keep reading. But if you’re happy in your little bubble, clinging to the idea that you’re in charge, then you might as well stop now. This is not for the faint of heart. This is for the Forward-Looking People, the ones who are ready to embrace the chaos and ride the wave.
The Problem: We’ve Been Sold a Lie
We’re taught from birth to build walls. To define ourselves by what we are not. I am me, you are you. This is mine, that is yours. We create these artificial boundaries, these little fortresses of self, and then we wonder why we feel so alone, so disconnected, so damn anxious all the time. We’ve been sold a bill of goods, a lie that says we are separate, and it’s making us miserable.
This illusion of separation is the root of so much of our suffering. It’s what allows us to hurt each other, to exploit the planet, to live in a constant state of fear and competition. We see ourselves as isolated units, fighting for our own little piece of the pie, when in reality, we’re all part of the same cosmic soup. The idea of a truly independent self is a fantasy. A dangerous one.
My mentor, the legendary Dr. Bob Melamede, used to say that life exists in a state that is far from equilibrium. It’s a constant dance on the edge of chaos. We’re not meant to be in a state of static, balanced perfection. We’re meant to be in a state of dynamic, flowing, interconnected change. And when we try to resist that flow, when we try to build walls and cut ourselves off from the whole, we create our own personal hell. We become Backward-Looking People, clinging to a past that no longer exists, terrified of a future that is constantly unfolding.
The Application: Cutting the Cords That Bind You
So, what does this all mean for you, in your day-to-day life? It means you have a choice. You can be a victim of your connections, or you can be a master of them. You can let the toxic cords of past relationships and negative thought patterns drain you of your life force, or you can learn to cut them and cultivate the connections that nourish and support you.
I’ve had to do this in my own life. I’ve had to cut cords with people I loved, with businesses I built, with versions of myself that no longer served me. It’s not easy. It’s painful. It feels like a part of you is dying. But it’s necessary. Because if you don’t cut the cords that are holding you back, you will never be free to move forward. You will be stuck in the past, a prisoner of your own history.
One of the most powerful ways to cut cords is through forgiveness. Forgiveness is not about condoning bad behavior. It’s about releasing the energetic charge of a past event. It’s about taking your power back. When you forgive someone, you are not letting them off the hook. You are letting yourself off the hook. You are cutting the aka cord that binds you to them, so you can be free to create your own future.
Another way to manage your energetic connections is through conscious attention. Where your attention goes, your energy flows. If you are constantly focusing on the negative, on what’s wrong with the world, on the people who have hurt you, you are feeding those connections. You are making those aka cords thicker and stronger. But if you consciously choose to focus on the positive, on what you’re grateful for, on the people who love and support you, you are cultivating a network of connections that will lift you up and carry you forward.
The Takeaway: You Are the Weaver of Your Own Web
You are not a passive observer in this interconnected universe. You are an active participant. You are the weaver of your own energetic web. Every thought you think, every word you speak, every action you take is creating and reinforcing the aka cords that connect you to the world.
So, what kind of web are you weaving? Is it a web of fear and separation, or is it a web of love and connection? Is it a web that traps you in the past, or is it a web that propels you into the future? The choice is yours.
Here are a few practical things you can do to start weaving a more beautiful web:
- Practice forgiveness: Make a list of everyone you need to forgive, including yourself. Write them a letter (you don’t have to send it) expressing your forgiveness. Then burn the letter and release the energy.
- Cultivate gratitude: Start a daily gratitude practice. Every day, write down three things you are grateful for. This will shift your attention to the positive and strengthen the aka cords that connect you to the good in your life.
- Be mindful of your media consumption: The news, social media, the people you follow – they are all creating aka cords with you. Be ruthless about cutting out the sources of negativity and fear. Your energy is your most valuable resource. Don’t give it away to people who don’t deserve it.
- Connect with nature: Go for a walk in the woods. Sit by the ocean. Feel the sun on your skin. Nature is a powerful source of healing and connection. It will help you to clear your energy field and reconnect with the source of all life.
Closing
This is not just a philosophy. This is a survival guide for the 21st century. The world is changing faster than ever before. The old structures are crumbling. The old certainties are gone. The only way to survive, and to thrive, is to embrace the chaos, to lean into the flow, to become a Forward-Looking Person who is constantly adapting and evolving.
You are a far-from-equilibrium system, a beautiful, chaotic, self-organizing miracle. You are connected to everything and everyone. Stop fighting it. Stop trying to control it. Surrender to the flow. And watch as the universe rises up to meet you.
