The Man Who Connected Everything
You Are Not a Machine
What if I told you that everything you think you know about balance is bullshit?
Seriously. All that crap you hear about finding your center, seeking equilibrium, and maintaining a steady state? It’s a lie. A comfortable, well-marketed lie that’s keeping you stuck. You’re not a machine that needs to be perfectly calibrated. You’re a chaotic, energy-burning, ever-evolving system, and the moment you find true equilibrium is the moment you’re dead.
Think about it. A rock is in equilibrium. A corpse is in equilibrium. Life? Life exists at the edge of chaos. It’s a constant dance with disorder, a beautiful, messy, far-from-equilibrium state of being. And the man who helped me understand this, the man who connected the dots between the physics of the universe and the biology of our own bodies, was a stoned-out hippie with a PhD named Dr. Bob Melamede.
The Problem: Our Obsession with a Flawed Blueprint
We’re all handed a faulty blueprint from day one. Go to school, get good grades, find a stable job, buy a house, and settle down. It’s a prescription for a life of quiet desperation, a life spent trying to eliminate variables and reduce risk. We’re taught to build walls, to create routines, to seek comfort and predictability. We’re told that this is the path to happiness and success.
But it’s a trap. This backward-looking-person (BLP) mindset is a fight against the fundamental nature of the universe. The universe is not moving towards a state of perfect, static order. It’s moving towards increasing disorder. That’s the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and you can’t argue with it. It’s the law that gives us the arrow of time, the reason why you can’t unscramble an egg and why yesterday is gone forever.
So, what happens when you build your life around a principle that goes against the very fabric of reality? You become rigid. You become fragile. You become a BLP, constantly fighting a losing battle against change. You see it everywhere. The corporation that refuses to innovate and gets disrupted. The person who clings to a past relationship, unable to move on. The society that resists new ideas and stagnates.
They’re all trying to achieve equilibrium in a universe that demands constant adaptation. They’re all on a collision course with reality. And it’s a painful, soul-crushing way to live.
The Application: From Theory to Your Life
So, what does all this mean for you, right here, right now? It means you have a choice. You can continue to live like a BLP, fighting against the current, or you can embrace the FLP mindset and learn to flow with it.
It makes me laugh to reflect upon some of the choices I've made in my former life. Man was I a fucking idiot! I used to resist change; I used to hold on to things that were not; I made horrendous decisions every day, all in the effort to preserve my ego and resist change.
It wasn’t until I finally embraced the chaos, until I let go of the old and opened myself up to the new, that things started to change. It was terrifying. It was messy. But it was also liberating. I was finally flowing with the river instead of trying to swim against it. And that’s when the magic started to happen.
This isn’t just about business. It’s about everything. It’s about your relationships, your health, your personal growth. Are you clinging to a toxic relationship because you’re afraid of being alone? Are you sticking to a workout routine that you hate because it’s what you’ve always done? Are you afraid to learn a new skill because you’re worried you’ll fail?
That’s the BLP mindset at work. And it’s a recipe for a small, unfulfilling life.
The Takeaway: How to Be an FLP
Becoming an FLP isn’t about throwing all caution to the wind and living a life of reckless abandon. It’s about making a conscious shift in your perspective. It’s about learning to see the world not as a collection of static objects, but as a dynamic, interconnected web of energy and information.
Here are a few ways to start cultivating the FLP mindset:
- Embrace Novelty: Actively seek out new experiences, new ideas, and new people. Get out of your comfort zone. Travel. Read a book on a topic you know nothing about. Have a conversation with someone who holds a different worldview. This is how you introduce new energy and information into your system.
- Listen to Your Body: Your body is an incredibly intelligent system. It’s constantly giving you feedback. Pay attention to it. Notice what gives you energy and what drains you. Notice what makes you feel expansive and what makes you feel contracted. Your body is your guide to navigating the flow.
- Practice Letting Go: This is a big one. We all have things we’re clinging to – past failures, old resentments, outdated beliefs. These things are anchors that keep us stuck in the past. Make a conscious effort to let them go. Forgive yourself. Forgive others. Free up that energy so you can use it to create your future.
- Nourish Your ECS: Dr. Bob would be the first to tell you that a healthy endocannabinoid system is essential for being an FLP. This means eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, managing your stress, and, yes, for some people, it might mean incorporating cannabis into their wellness routine. Do your own research. Listen to your own body. Find what works for you.
Closing: The Choice is Yours
Dr. Bob gave us a new map, a new way of understanding ourselves and our place in the universe. He showed us that we are not separate from the great cosmic dance, but an integral part of it. We are the universe experiencing itself, a temporary eddy in the river of time.
You can choose to fight the current, to build dams and levees in a futile attempt to control the flow. Or you can choose to build a raft, to learn the ways of the river, and to see where it takes you. The choice, as always, is yours.
