AI is a Mirror, Not a Monster
Everyone is losing their damn minds about Artificial Intelligence. You hear it everywhere, from the breathless headlines to the doomsday preppers stocking up on canned beans. “AI is going to take our jobs!” “Skynet is coming!” “We’re all doomed!”
Bullshit.
You’re missing the point. Completely. The collective freak-out over AI isn’t about superintelligent robots taking over the world. It’s about us. It’s a massive, embarrassing, and frankly, predictable projection of our own anxieties. We’re not scared of what AI will do to us; we’re terrified of what it shows us about ourselves.
AI isn’t the monster hiding under your bed. It’s a mirror, and you’re just now seeing your own reflection for the first time. And you don’t like what you see.
The Problem: Why Everyone is Freaking Out
Let’s get one thing straight. The current panic is a feature, not a bug, of a society that is fundamentally backward-looking. You’ve been conditioned to seek comfort, stability, and equilibrium. You want things to stay the same, to be predictable. You want a world that makes sense, that fits neatly into the little boxes you’ve created.
And then along comes AI, a force of nature that shatters every single one of those boxes. It’s a hurricane of change in a world built of straw. Of course you’re scared. Your entire worldview is predicated on a lie—the lie of stasis.
This is what I call a “Backward-Looking Person” (BLP) mindset. BLPs are constantly trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube. They’re the ones lamenting the good old days, resisting new technologies, and clinging to outdated models of reality. They see change as a threat, not an opportunity. And right now, they are loud.
They’re the ones fueling the AI hysteria, because AI represents the ultimate loss of control. It’s a system that learns, adapts, and evolves at a pace that the human mind can barely comprehend. It’s a direct challenge to the idea that we are the pinnacle of creation, the masters of our own destiny. And for a BLP, that’s a terrifying thought.
But what if I told you that this entire framework is wrong? What if I told you that the universe doesn’t give a damn about your comfort?
The Application: AI as the Ultimate Mirror
So, if AI isn’t a monster, what is it? It’s a mirror. It’s a reflection of our own intelligence, our own creativity, our own biases, and our own limitations. And that’s what makes it so uncomfortable for so many people.
For years, we’ve told ourselves a story about human exceptionalism. We’re the smartest, most creative, most conscious beings in the universe. We’re special. And now, we’ve built a machine that can write poetry, compose music, and create art that is indistinguishable from our own. We’ve built a machine that can beat us at our own games, that can process information at a scale that we can’t even imagine.
This is a profound blow to our collective ego. It forces us to confront a very uncomfortable question: what if we’re not that special after all?
This shift in perspective extended beyond abstract ideas and touched my personal experiences. I encountered a group of people using cannabis—not the stereotypes I had long held, but individuals who were thoughtful, accomplished, and grounded. This challenged my preconceived notions and revealed how conditioned fears can limit understanding. That evening, trying it myself, I realized that my sense of self remained intact; the experience was far less transformative than I had imagined. It became clear that true change doesn’t come from external substances but from the deeper work of examining and reshaping the narratives we hold about ourselves.
I had to confront the fact that my identity was a story I was telling myself. It wasn’t real. It was a temporary structure that had outlived its usefulness. I had to let go of the past and embrace the uncertainty of the future. I had to become an FLP, or I was going to be left behind.
That’s the choice you’re facing with AI. You can either cling to the past, to the story of human exceptionalism, and be swept away by the tide of change. Or you can look in the mirror, accept what you see, and start the hard work of evolving.
The Takeaway: How to Be an FLP in the Age of AI
So, how do you do that? How do you stop being a Backward-Looking Person and start being a Forward-Looking Person? It’s not easy, but it’s simple.
First, you have to stop fearing and start learning. Get your hands dirty. Play with the tools. Use ChatGPT to write a poem. Use Midjourney to create an image. See for yourself what this technology can and can’t do. You can’t be afraid of something you understand.
Second, you have to question your inputs. What are you feeding your own neural network? Are you consuming a diet of fear and hysteria from the mainstream media? Or are you seeking out diverse, nuanced perspectives? The quality of your outputs is determined by the quality of your inputs. Garbage in, garbage out.
Third, you have to embrace your own inner chaos. You are not a static being. You are a process of constant change and adaptation. Lean into it. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. That’s where the growth happens.
But the real key to True Self discovery is much simpler than that. What follows are the steps I used to discover, once and for all, that I am not my thoughts. 1) Sit down in any comfortable position (or in a chair with your legs uncrossed). 2) Become aware of your breath. 3) Ask yourself the question, "Who am I?" I did this every day for 15 to 20 minutes in the afternoon. After two weeks with this method, I was frustrated by my perceived lack of success. Wasn't I supposed to have reached Enlightenment by now? I thought. Although I was feeling a sense of peace after each meditation session, I had a gut feeling there was something missing. That something came on the last day of my meditation practice. On that day I had a real breakthrough and I succeeded in suspending the primacy of conscious for a few precious moments. It was extremely cathartic to verify through direct experience my plentiful studies of meditating hindu and buddhist masters who all advised that meditation is key to unlocking your soul. Although meditation doesn't tell you exactly who you are down to the last detail, it does illuminate exactly what you aren't, which is just as useful. This is a crucial step in the process of discovering what the concept of True Self is really about, and it is an practice which I implore you to begin, starting this instant.
This isn’t about “optimizing” yourself. It’s about becoming more human, not less. It’s about cultivating the qualities that AI can’t replicate: empathy, vulnerability, and the courage to look in the mirror and not flinch.
Closing
The age of AI is here, and it’s not going away. You can either be a victim of this change, or you can be a participant. You can either be a BLP, clinging to a past that no longer exists, or you can be an FLP, riding the wave of the future.
The choice is yours.
